Zero2IPO Launches Venture Database
Can startup information be monetized? Zero2IPO thinks it has found a way by using a yellow pages model. China Venture Database is going to be a centralized repository about company, people and deals information.
While there’re plenty of tech blogs reporting new products every day. We are not really lack of timely news. But we do need some comprehensive compiling. When we did reader survey back in last September, one of the requests is a Wiki about company information organized in domains. While it’s definitely on our todo list, the progress is slow as none of us are working fulltime on this. Zero2IPO’s database might be a good complement.
As we all know, timely and comprehensive usually won’t happen in the same place. In order to be a timely information source, the database meets strong challenges from blogs and mainstream media, and they are free any way. What’s more, sites like Crunchbase are there to beat these paid subscription model with reference to more trustworthy sources. There will be such a free database about China. Anyone can predict it.
Even without those free competitors, its contribution to business is not that direct as your first glance. If you have ever attended any conference in the past year, you know that people swap name cards like crazy. Lots of contact information are public already. The question is if you have the relationship to get your voice picked up. A database cannot help in any way on this problem. By the end, who is still harvesting yellow pages? Mostly spammers.

I was disappointed when I noticed that the free trial is only open to qualified investor and organizations. Obviously, this database is not designed as Crunchbase for every one who is interested in entrepreneurship. But after years of practice in this field, this is a nice step forward for zero2ipo.
