Social Music Service Updates: Yobo.com and 8box.cn

The social music recommendation service MyStrands announced it completed series B financing, which brings its total financing to $55 million. The social music recommendation services in China are not so lucky, but they are trying their best to develop services which can attract Chinese online music users, most of them rely on Baidu mp3 search or Kugoo now.

Yobo.com just launched their new version on its first year anniversary. Even though Allen Guo, founder of Yobo told me that they have worked on this new version for quite a long time, it does not have major new features. Instead, they focus this upgrade on improvement of user experience.

YoboYou can easily find its Pandora-like flash player on its homepage for users to create their own music radio stations, display of lyrics of songs has been greatly improved. Yobo has spent over a year to let its team to analyze and tag over 160,000 songs, which laid solid foundation for music recommendation. But its recommendation engines still need further improvement, as sometimes the recommendations are not so good.

Yobo also add Facebook newsfeed-like notices to let you know the latest activities of your friends, as I said before, the newsfeed will be a standard feature of social networking sites.

8box.cn is another popular social music service in China, it recently rolled out two small mashups. The “Look Around” mashup is the remix of Google Maps and 8Box.cn, it show who is listening to which songs on Google Maps based on this user’s geographic information.

Another is the mashup of 8box.cn and various Twitter-like miniblog service, it now supports Fanfou and Zuosa, the support of Twitter and Jiwai.de will be added soon. Your activities on 8box.cn, such as listening to songs and rating songs, will be posted to your miniblog automatically. For Zuosa, it goes even further, your friends can listen to the music appeared on your miniblog updates directly on Zuosa.

Mashup for 8box and Zuosa, the Zuosa API multimedia format…

Zuosa was created from Twitter way, as everyone know, everything in China, will be changed, just like QQ is not ICQ, Baidu is not Google, Zuosa is not Twitter too.
First, Twitter did not support multimedia, but Zuosa did. You can upload images on Zuos…

I have to say I love the new design of yobo, a hundred time better than Pandora. Actually seems to me yobo is heading a different way than Pandora, it’s building a music facebook, in Chinese. facebook is not for Chinese speaking users, and I don’t like xiaonei now owned by Chen. If yobo can help me get connected with friends, by music, I’ll use it and quit facebook, which has been taken over by millions of apps, annoying…
