QQ Campus: Not Yet a Challenger to Xiaonei
In last week, Tencent finally launched QQ Campus, after more than half a year limited beta test. QQ Campus is obviously the direct competitor of Xiaonei.com, Zhanzuo and other campus social network websites in China.
In order to only allow students to register, many campus social network sites use email address to verify users’ identity. But QQ Campus require you to use QQ im tool to join a QQ group to verify, but after I tried several times, I still have no idea how to do it, maybe because I’m not a typical QQ user.
As most social network sites, every user has a profile page, you can add friends, write blogs, create and join groups, share photos and so on. QQ campus has a feature similar to Facebook’s mini-feed, it shows your various activities in your profile page. QQ campus has a twitter-like micro-blogging service as well.
But there is a big difference between QQ Campus and other similar websites, the user name. Since QQ Campus is based on QQ’s platform, almost all QQ users are using their Internet name instead of their real name, while, as you can find in Facebook and Xiaonei, users of campus social networks tend to use their real name, it facilitate users communication and create more value for users and websites.
When QQ enters a new market with its half a billion users, none of its competitors should neglect it. But Xiaonei, the leading player in this sector, has reached over 100 million page views, covered more than 2,000 universities and colleges in China and started to open its doors to companies networks, it is one of the most important assets of Oak Pacific. While QQ has too many products, it’s very likely that QQ will not focus resources on products like QQ Campus. So I think QQ Campus is still not a challenger to Xiaonei, esp. when user name system would be a potential weakness of QQ Campus in future development.

[...] Actually, this is not the first campus sns service by QQ. On Sep. 2007, QQ launched a service called QQ Campus, but it did not make the progress as QQ expected. Will this new QQ Xiaoyou challenge the leading position of Xiaonei.com in this market in China? Yes, QQ has huge user base and it can integrate QQ Xiaoyou with other popular QQ services for cross marketing. But Xiaonei also got quite good momentum, plans to open platform, and have enough financial supports. [...]
