Yahoo China Launches People Search

Yesterday Yahoo China released a new version of its universal search service, Yahoo.cn, among all feature improvements and updates, a new people search is the most noticeable one.

Now this new people search service only supports search for celebrities. For example, when you search Jack Ma (马云) in Yahoo.cn, you will find the first result is the introduction of Jack Ma (see screenshot below), and in the right sidebar, there is a flash to show Jack Ma in the center rounded by related people, you can click “expand details” to see a people search result page.

In the people search result page, you can see a big flash, which is similar to the small flash in web search result page, but it also shows the relationship between Jack Ma and those related people. Yahoo said it takes information extraction technology and semantic analysis to get these relationship. Under the flash, there are explanations of why they are related to Jack Ma, and the sources where Yahoo China got them.

In the flash, there is a tab which will display the biography of Jack Ma, it is also extracted from web pages. But information for many people is not updated or is not correct, because there are so many people with the same Chinese name.

In fact, the idea of a flash relationship map is not new, Koowo also has a people relationship map for entertainment stars. And I found there are many incorrect relationships found by Yahoo, it still has to put great efforts in improving it before it finally becomes useful. If comparing it with the real people search engine as Spock, I would prefer Spock, since it provide better aggregated results than Yahoo China.

[...] – Yahoo China has just released a new version of its search, Yahoo.cn, that includes a people search, though it’s focused on celebrities. Yahoo uses information extraction technology and semantic analysis to create a Flash-based map of relationships, along with explanations of why they are related to and the sources of the information. China Web 2.0 provides an example of Jack Ma. Another Chinese company, Koowo, reportedly got $5.5 million for among other things, a similar mapping of Chinese stars. However, the downside is that these offerings often appear to be inaccurate. Finally, there’s Ucloo, the Chinese people search, that last we heard was looking to raise a round of capital. [...]
