Yoho.cn: Social Networks for Young People

YohoYoho.cn is the website launched in May 2007 by “Yoho!”(潮流志), a very popular fashion magazine among youngsters between 15 to 25 in China. According to Alexa, this website is gaining a lot of page views lately. The magazine promotes the website to drive young people checking out the website, and the nice design and rich content of Yoho.cn might be another sticky factor that makes youngsters coming back.

Since the team memebers of Yoho! are very young people as well, they knows what young people like, so they develop a website that really appeals to young people. I feel it appealing even though I’m not young anymore. They use high quality pictures and organize them very well in the page. Also they picked a nice black and white theme for the whole site to make it really sharp to look at.

On the content side, Yoho.cn is using a combination of web 1.0 and web 2.0 approach. There are a bunch of traditional sub channels like Entertainment, Fashion, Comic and Beauties. They also build a social network among the users. They tried to be creative by organizing the social network features like a virtual city by naming them City Plaza, Villas, Resident Center and Design rooms. The real thing behind the fancy names though is nothing but Myspace like blogs and user groups.

Taking advantage of its popular magazine, Yoho.cn has potential to be next popular social networks among young people in China if they keep improving their social network features, but of course, they need to compete with two leaders in this market, QQ and 51.com.
