Taotao: Twitter Clone from QQ

TaotaoIt is obvious that Tencent has realized the value of microblogging, esp. when QQ itself is also a communication tool, therefore, Tencent launched a stand-alone service called Taotao, no just as part of its video sharing service.

It seems Taotao copied almost everything of Twitter, you can use Taotao to update “what are you doing”(yes, Taotao also use it in its homepage) in less than 140 characters, it supports updating and receiving notification via QQ bot, mobile phone and web, you can follow the updates of your friends, and turn on/off the notification of your friends. Well, no widgets available so far.

Of course, it is not a good news for other Twitter clones in China, since Tencent has the most extensive im user base, and the characteristics of this kind of microblogging service also match with profile of QQ’s users.

How will those Twitter clones compete with Taotao? They can support various im bots besides QQ, it then becomes a cross-im chatting tool. Some of them, such as Fanfou, are successful in enhancing its features by third-parties and open API. Maybe QQ will not support other im bots, and will not provide open API. Are these important for Fanfou to compete with QQ? What else can they do?

Since QQ usually tends to be an walled garden, can Fanfou compete with Taotao by taking an open strategy? Anyway, I think it would be an interesting case to follow to understand better the Internet environment in China.

[...] Taotao.com, Tencent’s brand new web2.0 experience has been launched several days ago. It is a Twitter-like service. Thanks to QQ, now Taotao’s users are able to send the taotao-messages from a mobile and receive them on QQ. Right after I read the news, I dropped an email to Richard, the Director of Tencent’s Innovation Center (QQ Labs) and asked if it was him and his team behind Taotao. He confirmed it and also emphasized that he’s pretty sure Taotao.com would be another success web2.0 trial (with QQ Bookmark). Richard also mentioned QQ Bookmark had quietly launched its English version. [...]

  8. 2007 China’s Web and Wireless Sector In Review : China Web2.0 Review on January 3rd, 2008 12:44 am

[...] In 2007, we continues to see many copycats in the market, for instance, Twitter-like services as Taotao, Fanfou and Jiwai.de, Facebook-style websites as Hainei.com and virtual world services as Hipihi and Novoking. Among various kinds of copycats, those Youtube wannabes are most favored by venture capitals with about $100 million investment in video sharing sites in 2007. However, because of the new regulation co-issued by Ministry of Information Industry and State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, which require online audio and video services to be majority state-owned companies, may impose potential regulation risks on operation of those video sharing websites, but it is still possible that they will work out some solutions to work around the regulation.
