GuaiShow: Social Network On Collection
Beijing based Guaishow is a place to show any kind of personal collections which you believe will make others jealous. They can be old toys, fancy clothes or stuffs which are actually nothing but cute.
Guaishow launched in April. One of the co-founders is Tenglong, a productive blogger who is maintaining syndicated blogs on almost all popular BSPs. Think this weird? Maitian, CEO of Mayi is doing the same thing.
Guaishow’s main feature is for users to upload pictures of their cool stuffs and descriptions. Then others can vote, comment it or simply say ‘WoW’.
But it has made tight rules to forbid commercialized uploading. And it also claim its model is not based on review or product refer. This has made everyone curious what its business model is.
Some of my thoughts after playing with it.
First, I think they found a niche market. There do exist people who either travel or go shopping a lot. They buy a lot of things because of nothing but showing to their families and friends. Such kind of platform will make their peers easily discoverable. And probably they can find things they are longing for.
Second, there’s no better thing than tight control of the submitting of goods. If there’s no such kind of rule, you will be nothing. The entrance barrier of similar services is the culture. Personal collections reflect your users’ personality. While product list from commercial entities will destroy this distinction. You are not going to be another Taobao.
Last, I feel the most compelling feature of such kind of platform would be visual search. While your typical goods are not so standard as Nokia N95. Most of things don’t even have a name, unless you call ‘A Cute Wooden Doll’ name. Wouldn’t it be good if you can find similar goods according to the shape and color. Or probably you can find relevant web pages about the goods you are looking at without knowing what others will call it. This will be much more interesting and useful than simply tagging. A good example is Like.com.

[...] A relatively significant change in this version is the goods collection module. Apparently they have made big effort to ensure you put the right thing in the right category with a guide. What makes the difference from Guaishow is that Mayi probably answered the question: We have got a buyer’s community, now what? Their yet-to-finish shopping mall will bring sellers more close to the community. [...]
