Netease Tests Digg in News

Netease News DiggDigg, as a community driven social news model, has been copied by many startups globally, but it has never reach its tipping point in China, partly because traditional news portal website still dominate online news market. So Netease’s recent initiative to incorporate digg model in some of its news content may make digg more popular in China. (via Solidot)

Currently, we can only find world news and local odd news in this new digg service, any users can digg news without registration, but where is incoming news in queue? Even when I explored Netease’s these two news channel, I can not find out how to digg news. It seems now only news selected by Netease’s editors are allowed to digg. I don’t know whether it is because news is still regulated in China or because Netease still has not enough confidence in digg model, so they only apply news digging in a very small scope for experiment.

The most important element of a community driven news model is that users choices are able to influence the rank of news, the wisdom of crowds can change the way we read news. In this aspect, Netease’s model is still not a real social news model, editor’s choice determine news you can read. Considering market and regulation environment in China, I can understand Netease’s caution, and I’m looking forward to further development in Netease’s news, to bring more fresh air in Chinese online news market.

    Netease, stop this stupid act! we don’t wanna see those headline news that already filtered by red devil. Looking for something non-filtered ? I think visit some porn website is better than taking those “一个成熟白邻的一夜情” or “老公婚后的自白” news.

    One thing for sure, Netease is a totally ICP (Internet Copy & Paste) company in some way.
