Lagio: Place for Recording and Sharing Sounds
Lagio is a sound recording and sharing community launched by Guangzhou based Rock Mobile. Now it’s meeting Taiwan market, so it’s in Traditional Chinese. Originally it was in this domain, but it’s redirected to Lagio since Feb. 2007. In fact, IRock is another music community being operated by Rock Mobile.
Lagio means radio in Japanese. It’s also the abbreviation of Let Audio Get Internet Online, or Let All Great Inspiration Online.
The main features of Lagio are to simplify sound recording process and host those sounds online. There’re three methods to contribute sounds into the system: Web upload, online recording, and cell phone recording. The cell phone recording feature is only available in Taiwan district. But it’s the most compelling feature to make lots of things happen. Sound recording ability of cell phone is way under used compared to taking photos and watching TVs.
Sound files can be organized into album. I believe original idea of this service is to establish a sound database similar to the awesome Freesound. But in reality, you guessed right, most of the contributions are songs not sounds. Albums can be used as podcasting channels, and they do have feeds. Lagio also provides interacts feature like comments so that they realized a social network around sounds. All the recordings in the database are licensed under creative common.
I am finding that sound is another yet to explore vertical market. I wonder when we will see great sound search engine like Findsounds emerges in local market. Sound is not music, is more natural, and its products must be more interesting.
