Babytree: Myspace for Parents

BabyTreeShortly after Google China’s CMO Allen Wang resigned in last November, we know Mr. Wang will partner with Bo Shao, founder of Eachnet (aka eBay China), to run a new startup about a community for parents. Babytree, their new venture, is officially online today.

Being a Myspace for a niche market, Babytree offer those common features of a social networking sites, i.e. to write blogs for their babies, upload photos, create and join groups for discussion and networking, discuss in forum, and add friends to develop contact networks. I think they will add video sharing, question and answer and more social features later.

As a father of a two-year old daughter, I can fully understand the anxiety and demand of mummies to learn parenting knowledge, build networking and share feelings, there is high demand for such kind of website. In US, we can find many similar startups as well, such as Minti, Maya’s Mum, ParentClick, to name a few. Moreover, Shaun Rein of the China Market Research Group thought it is time for Chinese baby boomers to have their own babies, so there is definitely huge market for a Myspace for parents in China in recent years.

Babytree’s rivals include Yaolan, an online community for parents established eight years ago, but it seems Babytree focus more on social networking. And the style of Yaolan’s baby space is very similar to Cyworld of Korea, users can also use various virtual items to decorate it. However, I prefer the simple and clean design of Babytree.

this is a belated thanks to the mention of babytree. since our launch on march 8th, 5 weeks have passed, and we are stunned by its tremendous growth.

Chinese parents, particularly moms, have turned to babytree in huge numbers to make friends, to find useful information, and to document their babies’ lives via “my babytree”.

good luck to all our peers worldwide…
