Kingsoft Raises $22M from JAFCO for Overseas Market and Internet Business

KingsoftBeijing based office, security and gaming software developer Kingsoft has announced that its Japanese branch has raised $22M from JAFCO for future growth in Japanese market, National Business Daily is reporting.

JAFCO is said to be one of the biggest venture capital in Japan. It also invested in Shanghai based video sharing site Tudou.

Two days ago, there’s a news report said that Kingsoft is developing WPS online. To be honest, if there’s no pirated Microsoft Office or Google office online, Kingsoft office software would be promising in China. Now its strategy to explore overseas copyright respecting market like Japan is a smart move, probably a good lesson for local software companies which are complaining piracy problem.

Some history of Kingsoft funding quoted from NBD report: In 1998, Kingsoft received first round of funding from Lenovo. In Aug. 2006, it raised $72M from GIC, Intel Capital, New Horizon. In March 2005, it opened Japan branch.

Update: Young of China Venture and Pacific Epoch both confirmed that the US$22M is post-money valuation not the amount of the investment. It seems that I just learned a new word. Thanks, Young!
