Kaible: Price Comparison with Camera Phones

Kaible is a Shanghai-based startup who is mainly engaged in price comparison business in China. In its corporate information, it said Kaible is a US company invested by Dragon Fund.

Kaible’s most important feature is its function of price comparison by camera phone. If your mobile phone support GPRS or CDMA, then you can download a software from Kaible’s Wap site, then you can take photo of bar code of any goods, the software will scan the barcode and send information to Kaible, Kaible will return pricing information to your cell phone. For mobile phone without camera, you can also send bar code information via SMS to Kaible for price searching.

I think it is a cool idea to take advantage of convenience and penetration of camera mobile phone to develop price comparison business. Price comparison market is still very immature in China, only Sogou, search engine by Sohu, has a price comparison search engine. Since e-commerce value in China is growing exponentially, price comparison is a huge market to explore.

But it seems Kaible don’t have a price search engine to search pricing information from major e-commerce site in China, such as Dangdang, Joyo, taobao, eBay China. The merchandisers have to register as a seller in Kaible to fill in pricing information of their goods by themselves. Kaible’s way to collect pricing information is really the most ineffective one. I think that’s the main reason that I can only find little pricing info in its site, I cannot imagine a price comparison business without price search engine.
