SubscribeInnovative Search UI from Yahoo Engineers
Easysou is a new search UI experiment project from some Chinese Yahoo Engineers. According to the project blog, this site launched in Nov. 2006 or so.
This is just slightly after Google launched Searchmash in Oct. 2006 (Techcrunch report). It’s clearly a response from Yahoo Engineer telling us that they have innovation too. Just like that Google doesn’t leave any words about itself on Searchmash, you cannot imagine who is behind Easysou. But Jianing Yang, a Yahoo Engineer, left a comment on Techcrunch, and this made me confirmed that this is a Yahoo project, probably not officially supported, somewhat a 20% time project.
Easysou is not a new search engine, but just a new user interface. The result page is in two columns. The main part is tabbed and powered by Ajax, you don’t have to refresh the webpage to get more result. On top of search result is a word definition bar. If you are searching for an English word, it will show the definition of the word in this area.
On the right side area, it shows music search result, related search words, and image search result. Music search result can be played directly without leaving the page. Image search result will show you preview thumbnails.
On upper right corner of the search result page, there’re some search options.
- Restrict the result in specific time range.
- Location of the keywords: in title, or full text.
- Which database to use: China or US.
- Type of document: PDF, MS Word, plain text, etc.
- Save your search options. Since there’s no user account, this must be saved in cookies.
- Check all your search settings in one place.
Over all, I like the new search interface. It’s clean and well organized. Not sure how Yahoo search will be affected by this, but such kind of intrapreneurial spirit is valuable to all corporations.
