Yahoo China Launches Ajax Web Messenger

Yahoo MessengerCnbeta reported that Yahoo China has launched web interface for Yahoo Messenger. Currently there’s no official announcement yet, and there’s no link from Yahoo Messenger’s homepage. A post on Yahoo China Search blog last month mentioned this coming product.

To have a look at this product, you have to sign in your Yahoo account first. There’s no login entry for this product yet. This is another sign that the product is half baked. With your Yahoo account signed in, you will be taken to an Ajax user interface with your Yahoo Messenger contacts ready. This is a multi-tabbed interface, each chatting session occupies one tab. This product is different from Yahoo US web messenger, which uses Java Applet.

The URL of this product reminds me the other product of Yahoo China, Pingme, which is only available in its Chinese version. Yahoo Pingme launched on Sept. 28, 2006 (reported by DBA Notes). It provides a piece of scripting code for users to embed in any web page so that any user without a Yahoo Messenger account can contact them with just one click. It seems the new webbified messenger is a generalized version from Pingme.

Yahoo Messenger to Yahoo China is the same as Skype to Ebay. Yahoo China is operated by the dominating ecommerce company Alibaba, where Yahoo holds 40% share. Webbified messenger and Pingme simplifies real-time communication between buyer and seller and will play an important role in Alibaba’s future business.

Update: Early last month, 21 Century Business Herald reported that Alibaba will integrate Yahoo Messenger Chinese version and its other three instant messenger softwares into Alitalk. Currently total number of registered users of Alibaba’s four instant messenger is 15 million, quoted from 21 CBH’s report.

Update2: Yahoo officially announced the product.
