HooDong Open Source Wiki and Chinese Wiki Market
Hoodong, a wiki service in China, announced that it will release an open source Hoodong Wiki system. It is now open for free download.
Wiki, as one of the noticeable web 2.0 application, only get modest development in China, even compared with RSS. Many users start to know what is wiki from media’s report on Wikipedia, however, Wikipedia has been blocked in China by related authorities for more than a year. There are some Wikipedia-like wiki sites in China, for example, Hoodong, Cnic.org, WikiLib, AllWiki, Juhaochi.cn on food, China0km on backpacking tourism, almost all of them are powered by MediaWiki, except Hoodong.
Hoodong, a RedHerring 100 Asia shortlisted company, developed its own wiki system. The system has some social networking-like interactive features, such as user profile, friends and groups. Its open source system provides more option for users in China to build their own wiki site, it would be helpful to development of wiki in China.
On the other hand, the adoptions of wiki by big Chinese internet companies are also important to development of wiki in China. Baidu’s wiki-style service Baidu Baike has steady growth since it launced in this April. However, Baidu Baike aroused many arguments on its copyright infringement. Currently, Baidu Baike has 520,252 items and still counting, while Chinese Wikipedia just hit its 100,000 articles recently. Netease also embraced wiki by introducing a wiki focused on sports(via here).
