OPML.cn Relaunch

OPML.cnIn last year’s cnbloggercon, I met Cell (Liu Peng), the founder of Opml.cn and had some conversation about opml. On last November, he launched opml.cn with the aim to build an opml share community, something similar to Share Your OPML. But due to low market awareness, several months later, Opml.cn was directed to Goto.cn, a music playlist share community.

However, Cell has not stop his dream on opml, and he thinks as the release of IE7 and FireFox, more and more users will start to know RSS and OPML. It is time to relaunch Opml.cn. It is still an opml share and discovery community, it add a Grazr-like widget for users to embed it into blogs to share with friends. I tried to upload or import my own opml file, but it failed to parser it. It seems Opml.cn still has some serious bugs to be fixed before its official relaunch. But you can still have a glance at the widget on Cell’s blog in Sina. Opml.cn will also introduce its own rss reader, but it is still buggy and under development. Besides Opml.cn, Cell intends to expand to English-speaking world, an English version in opmling.com will be launched soon.

Though there are more users start to use RSS reader than one year ago, but I think opml is still too geeky. The idea is cool, but to build a successful community around opml is far from easy. Good luck, Cell.

Am I stuck in web 1.7? Reading this piece I had absolutely no idea what OPML was. And after visiting OPML.cn and another site linked above I *still* had no idea, save that it apparently involves “sharing outlines, feeds, and taxonomy” and that “it is up to me to decide how to use them”.

Perhaps the first step in pushing opml.cn forward is making it a bit more clear to casual surfers like myself why we should take the time to register. Changing the colour of the text on the main site so that the green font is not placed on top of a green graphic would help with readability too.

trevelyan, that’s why I think opml is too geeky to be accepted by many users. You can get an idea what is opml in Wikipedia.
