Chinese campus social network hot again
Cnetnews reported: Oak Pacific Interactive has acquired Xiaonei (profile), Chinese version of Facebook. It will combine with 5Q, Oak Pacific’s campus social network division.
According to the report, 5q was founded in Apr. 2006. It has covered 2000 universities in China. The registration number is 1.2 million. Xiaonei was founded in Dec. 2005. It has covered almost one thousand universities with 300 thousand registrations.
Wang Xin, founder of Xiaonei, will be in charge of the new combined division. In our opinion, this acquisition is a defensive activity, so that they can focus their resources to compete with their main enemy ChinaRen.
ChinaRen has just launched a new version of campus social network recently (profile). Before that ChinaRen was one of the largest online contact services for students.
Facebook has opened its registration to users outside of campus. Its original closed strategy has both positive and negative effect. Let’s see how long it will take for Oak Pacific to break the wall of this closed campus social network.
Update: Red Herring has an article on OPI’s acquisition of Xiaonei, and the article said that OPI plans to announce another deal next month.
