Everyone is a journalist with Soopie

Sometimes I would got the questions like why you don’t support local web2.0 companies by using their services, point to Chinese version of Youtube, point to Chinese version of Flickr. As a Chinese I would like to, but as a normal customer I just want to use the best services in the world, wherever its servers locate.

SoopieI have been thinking hard what a local web2.0 company could bring to me other than a Chinese user interface. Recently a local mobile photo sharing service that caught my eyes is Soopie. We can find similar services like Flickr plus ShoZu. But Soopie really brings something new.

The first new idea is to organize your photos in a story way. What’s a story? A collection of photos and videos describe what’s happening on a spot. Flickr has tags and sets, but doesn’t have such a feature. It’s a reason you should use Soopie. This makes the relationship between photos more clear.

Secondly, Soopie provides more community features than other similar services. Go to Soopie’s homepage and compare it with Flickr’s. Which one gives you more sense of a community? Chinese people are community creatures. Think why online forum is more popular than blog in China.

Thirdly, Soopie can bind your Flickr account. This is smart. Soopie knows they cannot make a hardcore Flickr user switch, so they provide a reason for you to try their service without leaving your favorite one. Let’s face it. Local web2.0 companies doesn’t have better servers, programmers, user base or more money. So beat them in a smart way.

One problem when I test Soopie is that I don’t find a convenient way to upload my photos from my cellphone to both Soopie and Flickr at the same time. Although they describe in this way on their blog.

I would like to see more smart local services, so that I have more stuffs to write.
