China Telecom search powered by Baidu
China Telecom has opened a search engine on its portal service. The new search service is called 114, which is the telephone number of yellowpage service of China Telecom.
On the homepage of 114 search engine, there’s a link to China Telecom’s yellowpage service, which has grown into a voice information search engine (news coverage).
The search engine includes 4 tabs: webpage, forum, blog and news. After some testing search, we found that the database is complete and up to date. It doesn’t like a new search engine. Through further investigation, we found that the webpage search is powered by Baidu. See two screen shots below. There’s even a link to Baidu’s paid ranking service in the first result from 114 search engine.
We also compared news search result with Baidu news. The results are not totally equal like webpage search. Since Baidu hasn’t launched blog and forum search, these two search services must have other sources. So far, we believe this search engine is just a mashup, because it’s unlikely that China Telecom has developed their own search database. Interesting enough, we found link to Qihoo mp3 search in the result from the other three search tabs. We don’t want to draw any conclusion without clear evidence.
This is a big move for China Telecom to enter search market. Local vertical search companies, especially some mobile search companies, will have another big player to watch besides Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.
We first got the news from Pacific Epoch.
Update:BBS, Blog and News search of 114 are powered by Qihoo, not Baidu.

As far as I compared, except the web search, all other search service are powered by Qihoo.com, including news search, blog search. Mainly for two reasons:
1. The consequence of the search result.
2. The design of the web pages.
Ni hao!
