Baidu Spaces To Launch On July

As reported before, Baidu is developing a social networking service called Baidu Spaces(百度空间), the service will use the sub-domain of hi.baidu.com rather than previously reported kongjian.baidu.com. Baidu Spaces is in private test now, and will officially launch on July 13rd.

Though the frontpage of Baidu Spaces is still unaccessable, the FAQ of the service has been live already. From the screenshot in FAQ, we can know main functions of Baidu Spaces are blogs and photo album, similar to MSN spaces. Besides that, you can also make contacts with other users of Baidu Spaces. It supports rss feed. Users are allowed to edit their spaces’ template and even edit the CSS, which is not usual among China’s blog hosting service providers. Users can also add background music for their spaces, but it has not been integrated with Baidu’s very popular mp3 search service.

Obviously, Baidu Spaces will affect the competitive landscape of China’s blog hosting market, but I think it is not easy for Baidu to challenge the position of Sina, Sohu and QQ in this market.

More screenshots of Baidu Spaces can be found here.
