Kaixin001 Has Ads on Apps

Kaixin001.com, the hottest name in China’s SNS sector, has started to monetize its traffic by adding ads into its extremely popular social game apps.

Parking war is one of the most popular social games in Kaixin001, now you can buy a brand-new Buick Regal car in the game. Unlike other cars, it is a “sponsored car” with a detailed description, and clicking “more” will lead you to Buick Regal’s website. Besides Parking War, Kaixin001.com also launched a game related to real estates, so it is not surprised that you will find real estate ads in this game some day, and cars and real estates are two most important online ads in China.

Many social networking sites is experimenting various advertising formats, it seems that display ads does not work very well on SNS, while the effects of engagement ads are better. What Kaixin001.com did is trying to make ads one of the element of the game, users will not only read it, more important, they play with it. Though we still have no idea about the its ROI, it is a good initiative of engagement ads in social media.

Based on Alexa, Kaixin001.com’s traffic has exceeded Xiaonei.com, and one of my friends who knows the industry very well also confirmed it. Its hard-to-remember domain name did not become an obstacle to its rapid growth, even though Oak Pacific Interactive, the holding company of Xiaonei.com, bought the domain Kaixin.com, and operated a site almost identical to Kaixin001.com under the same Chinese name.

KaiXin001 seems to be the next next thing, especially among young white collar workers. I can attest at least to its popularity in our office. But we should not get ahead of ourselves, overstating its popularity. Alexa is the worst tool in the marked since its numbers are so widely manipulated by Chinese start ups looking for VC Money. Alternatives include IResearch’s user tracker ($$$) and Google Trends.
While you I am happy to discuss the validity of either number, my test have shown that either alternative is more accurate that Alexa.
Here is a link showing KaiXin001 and Xiaonei on Google Trends. While KaiXin001 is growing fast, it still has only 1/3 of Xiaonei’s reach.

@Florian, I don’t think Alexa is an accurate index for site traffic either. But you should also check Baidu Index, which obviously has its limitation, but it also tells something.

@Tangos Thanks, will add Baidu Index to my set of tools. Baidu Index numbers are a bit ambiguous. Are they counting search queries for a term, or visits to the site?
If they are counting search queries, it could be a sign that new users (who have not bookmarked either site) are more interested in searching for Kaixin. If they show visits, it means that Kaixin is already more popular. I would wager the first is true.
An interesting side in the Google trends numbers. Kaixin seems to be much more popular in Beijing and Shanghai, but less so in second and third tier cities.

I’m interested in comparing Alexa, Google Trends, Baidu Index, and UseTracker. How can we get the Baidu index to search for both kaixin and kaixin001, when they are both called 开心网?
