Sohu Upgrades WebIM-like Service and Launches Satellite Map

Sohu recently rolled out a new version of its Little Notes service, making it more like a webIM. About one year ago, we reported that Sohu launched a service called Quick Notes, which enable users to chat with other users. The new version of Quick Notes launched on July 25th mimics the way that Facebook Chat functions.

When you log in to some Sohu’s products, such as Sohu blog, you will notice a chat bar at the bottom of your browser, no installation or assembly required. From the bar, you can view the list of your online and offline friends. You can chat with online friends, or leave message to your offline friends. It also allows you to change you status to “offline”, “busy” or “away” mode.

Sohu Notes
IM is a very important service for Chinese Internet users, since over 77% of Chinese netizens are using IM service. All major Chinese websites have their own IM tool, such as QQ from Tencent, Wangwang from Alibaba/Taobao, Baidu Hi from Baidu and UC from Sina. Now Little Notes can be a Sohu’s answer to IM service, it is web-based and integrated with Sohu’s social networking products.

Besides webIM, Sohu launches a satellite map feature on its Sogou Map. Currently, Sogou Map provides satellite maps for 21 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin and etc.

Some users compared Sogou Satellite Map with Google Earth, they found that for some cities, Google Earth’s satellite image is more updated than Sogou map, but for Beijing, Sogou map is more updated.

Sogou Satellite Map integrated with Sogou Map very well, and it has marked the name of main street and buildings on satellite images, which make it very easy to locate the place you are looking for. You can also find businesses and places of interests, such as restaurants, hotels, cafes, directly on the satellite maps. Therefore, it is more convenient to use for China’s users.
