Some Stats On China’s IM Services

Just two weeks after Baidu Hi launched its public beta test, Baidu announced on yesterday that over 1 million users has tried Baidu Hi. An IM service from Baidu will definitely attracts users’ attention, similar to Google’s GTalk. The real challenge is how many percentage of registered users will remain active six month later.

How to keep user active is also a challenge to Fetion, the IM service from China Mobile. According to the latest annual result announcement of China Mobile, by the end of 2007, Fetion has over 73 million registered users with about 67 million addition in 2007, but only 12.8 million, or are active users. If we compared it with data released by China Mobile in its interim results announcement, the situation is worse. By June of 2007, China Mobile had over 38 million subscribers with about 10 million active users already, that is in second half of 2007, about 35 million new users signed up Fetion, but only less than 3 million new active users. The significant slow down of active users may reflect the limited growth potential of Fetion, which most of users use for free SMS communication between PC and mobile phone.

In contrary to Fetion, QQ, which dominates China’s IM market, has 300 million active users by the end of 2007, with 68 million addition in 2007.

Based on the results of China IM Market Quarterly Tracker Q4 2007 by Analysys International, QQ accounts for about 78% market share among totally 390 million active IM accounts in China. MSN Live Messenger has about 19 million active users, accounting for 4.9% market shared, followed by Sina UC (4.1%), Fetion (3.7%) and Aliwangwang (3.1%). Leveraging Alibaba and Taobao’s B2B and C2C service, the No. of Aliwangwang’s active users keep increasing quickly. Its market share increased from 2.5% to 3.1% in last quarter of 2007, according to Analysys International’s tracker report.
