Gougou: An Online RSS Reader
Gougou (狗狗, means dog in Chinese) is an web-based RSS reader founded by Li Xueling(李学凌), former Director of Website Content of Netease (Nasdaq: NTES).
Before Gougou launched in August, Topim is the most popular Chinese web-based RSS reader. But topim was out of service, it seems that Gougou gain the market share from topim and became one of the leading player in China’s market. For those who are not familiar with English and RSS, Gougou is a good place for them. You don’t need to sign up to use its service, though signup is very easy.
Gougou uses the similar “two pane” format as Bloglines, with folders and feeds on left, and contents of the selected feed on right. So anyone who used bloglines can switch to Gougou smoothly.
Key Feature of Gougou:
- Easy import opml files, and able to import Bloglines subscription directly by providing your Bloglines’ account info
- Auto discover feed, but sometimes it just don’t work
- See number and name of subscribers for any feed, and provide subscription button with subscriber statistics like

- Save favorite post, similar to Bloglines’ clip/blog it function
- Top blogs list based on number of subscribers in Gougou
- Right-click subscription extension for both IE and Firefox
But Gougou’s replacement of original subscription address aroused controversy in blogosphere. For example, in Gougou, the subscription address of CWR has been changed to http://www.gougou.com/21DQDVK3, instead of original URL of http://feeds.feedburner.com/blogbeta/web2.
And in Gougou, sometimes we encounters wrongly decoded characters, it need to improve its capability to process feeds with different coding.
Currently, Gougou is only a web-based RSS reader without any innovative features, but its user-friendly interface and convenience may help it to attract more users who need a quick and easy-to-use RSS reader.
